When are Closets a Neat Feature?

September 30th, 2010 Posted in Bathroom, Neat Features Tags: , ,

So when are closets a neat feature?  When you live in a house that’s over 100 years old and you realize you don’t have any closet space!

When I bought my house a few months ago we thought we had found the perfect place.  It had all the bed rooms we needed (and would need).  It had a room that we could turn into a library right next to the living room – so I could read while my wife and daughter watched TV.  It had a room that I could use as an office.  And it even had a finished attic that would serve as a nice man cave and office for my wife when we get around to using that space.

What we didn’t notice is that there were no closets.  Well that’s not entirely true.  The kitchen has a closet.  Our daughter’s room has a closet.  And the master bedroom has a closet.  That’s it.  No closets anywhere else.

Until we moved in, I never realized how often I used / needed closets!

That’s what I love about this bathroom.  By my count there are five doors.  One for the toilet (I’m assuming).  One that lead to the master bedroom (I’m assuming again).  And three that lead to lovely, wonderful, closets.

Who knew that it was possible to have closet envy?

Creating a Wine Cork Bath Mat

April 20th, 2010 Posted in Bathroom, DIY, home design Tags: ,

We’ve shown a few Neat Features involving wine.  These are great solutions for storing your wine.  But how many of us only store wine?  Usually, we get around to drinking it.  So does that mean the Neat Features need to stop?

Of course not!

You can put those wine corks to good use, by creating a bath mat.

How durable is this bathmat?  Well that’s a good question.  I’m not convinced it will be a long-lasting solution.  However I could be wrong.  You can follow Monica Ewing’s (Caftynest.com) Twitter feed to find out.  She’s promised to test the bath mat for a few weeks.

Another potential problem is mold and mildew.  (Just remember to seal the bath mat and keep an eye on it.)

Even if the mat doesn’t hold up long-term, it’s still a great solution for a guest bathroom.  This bath mat adds personality, has some attitude, and creates a guest bathroom that’s worth using.  (Which are the same three things that I said make something a neat feature.)
